| Abstract | This paper investigates to what degree it is possible to succeed in obtaining a representative internet panel. We therefore examine the representativeness of a panel, which explicitly aims to be representative, has undertaken considerable efforts to accomplish this, and is established in a country with a high internet penetration. Representativeness is studied by comparing the characteristics of the panel members to national statistics. This study enables us to determine a degree for the upper bound of representativeness that can be reached in online-panels, also for other countries. A comparison with panel data collected in a more traditional manner and with an online access panel is provided. For representative survey data, the response to specific questionnaires in the panel is important as well. We find a considerable overlap between the variables associated with differences in the probability to participate in the panel and the probability to respond to individual questionnaires. |
